The offset of a wheel is the distance from the hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. The wheel offset is measured in millimetres and results in a positive, negative, or zero offsets.

Positive offset is when the hub mounting surface is toward the front or wheel side of the wheel. It is common to find a positive offset in newer and front wheel drive vehicles.

Negative offset is when the hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheel’s centerline. A negative offset wheel usually has a “deep lip” Zero offset The hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of the wheel.

What is offset and why is it important? The offset means where the wheel will sit in relation to the guards on the car. If you take this wheel here and you draw a line right down the middle of it, then when you look where the bolting face is here, the bolting face is bang in the middle of the wheel.

You’ve got what you call a zero offset wheel. If you take the bolting face and you move it more towards the outer edge of the wheel, you’ll have a positive offset, so if we went 20 millimetres here we’d have a positive 20 offset. If we went 20 millimetres this way, we’d have a negative 20-millimetre offset.

This is where it gets confusing. A positive 20-millimetre offset will push the wheel closer to the guards of the car. Where a negative offset will push it further out. It’s important that we make sure we calculate the right offset for your car before you buy the wheels.
